Stephen To Doubles Again As SCC Butterfly Champion
Pasadena City College men's swimmer Stephen To hit a double for the second straight season by winning both the 100- and 200-yard butterfly titles at the 2013 South Coast Conference Swimming Championships held April 18-20 at Chaffey College.
On Saturday's final day of the meet, To swam a time of 1:55.38, two full seconds slower than his freshman 2012 win, but enough for the conference gold medal in the 200 butterfly. To is the defending CCCAA state champion in this event.
Sharif Alaoui (2010-2011) and Nick Lao (2006-2007) are the only other PCC swimmers under head coach Terry Stoddard (since 2000) to earn two or more conference titles in back-to-back seasons. Lao and Alaoui actually were repeat champions in three different events.
More remarkable is the fact that a Lancer swimmer has won the SCC 200 fly title in each of the last six years. The streak started with Tai Nuntapramote in 2008-2009, then Alaoui in 2010-2011, and now To.
Michael Chiodo posted a second place in the 200 backstroke at 1:57.86. John Darrin Smith was seventh in the 200 breaststroke (2:22.50). The Lancers placed sixth at the conference finals with 303 points. El Camino College won its first-ever SCC team championship with 679 points.
Chiodo, also a sophomore, qualified for the upcoming CCCAA State Championships in three events, although two will be in "B" heats. He made the elite "A" cut in the 200 back. To will participate in the "A" heats in both butterfly events.
WOMEN QUALIFIERS FOR STATE MEET
Freshman Emily Frederick will swim in the 100 individual medley, an event she holds the PCC school record in, but did not participate in the event at the conference meet. Frederick will also swim in the 50 backstroke and 100 freestyle, two events where she did earn gold medal titles and set PCC records at the conference championships. Freshman Arolyn Basham did not win a SCC individual crown, but has qualified for the 100 IM and the 50 and 100 breaststroke events. She set new PCC records in the breaststroke events over the weekend.
Basham, Frederick, Cheung and sophomore Paige Watroba will be busy at the state meet in qualifying for four relay events--the 400 medley relay, the 200 medley relay, the 800 freestyle, and the 400 freestyle. The "Fearless Four" set new school records in all four of those relays.
The CCCAA State Championships take place Thursday-Saturday, April 25-27 at East Los Angeles College's indoor swim stadium.
