Browne's Double Helps Women's Track and Field Place 3rd In SCC
For the first time in 12 years, the Pasadena City College women's track and field team finished as high as third place at the South Coast Conference Championships. The Lancers performed the feat in the combined SCC Prelims and Finals meets that took place April 23 and April 26 at Mt. San Antonio College.
Sprinter Omhunique Browne established herself as the state's No. 1 racer as she won both the 100-meter and 200-meter dashes in becoming a double conference champion.
Browne ran an electrifying 11.33 seconds to set this year's new state standard and win the 100 by .78 of a second ahead of Mt. SAC's Brittany Myricks. She also scored the 200 title with another explosive state-leading 23.46 as she defeated her nearest competitor by 1.05 seconds.
The Lancers scored 76 team points, 13 less than the 2001 team's performance when the team featured the nations' top community college pole vaulter Elizabeth Heskett. However, the team's third place spot is a huge achievement for a program that was sixth last year and had not placed above fourth place in more than a decade. Cerritos (288 points) won the conference title while Mt. San Antonio (197) was second.
Christina Shamirian grabbed a third place medal in the 3,000 steeplechase with a 12:19.20 time. The Lancers settled for second in the 4x400 relay (3:52.69) behind the racing of Breanna Clark, Browne, Sophia Amodia, and Erica Payne.
Diane Lombardi placed fifth in the 800 meters at 2:22.07, and was sixth in the 1,500 at 4:57.32. Arielle Barragan-Steimer was sixth in the 5,000 meters (18:56.62). Kia Smith placed fourth in the 100 hurdles (15:05) while Amodia was sixth in the 400 hurdles (1:04.71).
"We're obviously pleased with taking third place as a team at conference," said PCC head coach Larry Wade. "Omhunique is at the top of her game and is ready for both SoCal and state. We are certainly going to be in the thick of things in the relays and it's starting to look like we are gaining in top state marks in other events. This is a big year for Lancers' women's track and field and we hope to show our worth at regionals and state."
The Lancers now will set their sights on the Southern California Prelims on Saturday, May 4 at Antelope Valley College. Field events start at 9 a.m. and track events begin at 10:30 a.m.
