Diver McKinley, Cross Country's Serna Named Valedictorians

Diver McKinley, Cross Country's Serna Named Valedictorians image

Pasadena City College athletics celebrated  two student-athletes as among the 10-person group of valedictorians that took part in Friday's 88th PCC Commencement ceremony at Robinson Stadium. [editor's note--release was revised after ceremony took place].

Gweneth McKinley, a diver from the Lancers women's swimming and diving team, is a mathematics major who has received numerous school scholarships. McKinley received the Edna Plummer Scholarship, the Alice and Don Slater Scholarship, and a Nancy Lee Wyker Excellence Award as well as receiving an Academic Senate scholarship. She was an honors student in calculus. 

As the Lancers' lone diver during the South Coast Conference season, McKinley placed third at the SCC Finals in the 1-meter board competition with 147.35 diving points. McKinley was home schooled in her prep years. McKinley was guided by PCC swimming and diving head coach Terry Stoddard.

Jack Serna, from the men's cross country team, is the other sports' valedictorian. Serna received a Wyker award as well as being named Honors Extraordinary in social sciences, and Superior Achievement in both psychology and sociology. The social sciences' major placed 86th at the SCC Cross Country Championships last year. He attended Bassett High (La Puente) before attending PCC. Serna was guided by PCC cross country head coach Armand Crespo.
