Lancer Browne Earns 2 SCC Women's Track Awards
Pasadena City College freshman sprinter Omhunique Browne was named the South Coast Conference Women's Track Athlete of the Year and SCC Women's Running Athlete of the Meet for her performance at the conference championships meet. The honors were part of the conference awards selected by head coaches last week.
Browne, who set PCC school records in winning the 100-meter and 200-meter race titles, is the second Lancer female to win the two honors in the past three seasons after middle distance runner Tracee van der Wyk earned those awards in 2011.
Browne (from San Marino High) ran electrifying races in setting the top state time in the 100 at 11.33 seconds and then doing the same with her 23.47 mark in the 200. Over the weekend, Browne set the top times at the Southern California Prelims meet.
For the second straight year, PCC men's thrower Caleb Wood won the SCC Men's Field Athlete of the Meet. The sophomore Wood won both the javelin and discus titles with season-best tosses in each event. PCC throwers assistant coach Grace Apiafi was picked as an SCC Assistant Coach of the Year for her work with Wood and other Lancers' throwers. Apiafi was a former PCC head coach of track and field throughout the 1990s and early 2000s.
