PCC Hosts CCCAA State Badminton Championship Tournament May 9-11
Pasadena City College's Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium is the host site for this week's California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) State Badminton Championships to be held Thursday-Saturday, May 9-11.
The championships start with the state title match on Thursday between Southern California champion San Diego City College and North champion De Anza. Game time is 3 p.m. for the team championship final.
On Friday and Saturday, the individual singles and doubles competition takes place. The Lancers are represented well at their home venue, led by CCCAA defending state singles champion Angie Ortiz, 36-2 in singles play this year and a two-time South Coast Conference singles and doubles champion.
Ortiz is the conference's top seed and is joined by No. 5 seed Alice Liew, No. 6 seed Shaghig Avedisian, and No. 7 Alyssa Boyt. In doubles, Ortiz-Liew is also the South Coast's top seed while the pair of Avedisian and Alejandra Palacios qualified as the No. 5 seed.
The individuals begin at 12 noon on both Friday and Saturday. This is the fifth time that the college is hosting the state championships after PCC also hosted in 2001, 2004, 2006, and 2010.
