Men's Soccer Pair Earn Scholarships To Manhattanville College
Two sophomore defenders from the 2012 Pasadena City College men's soccer team will continue to play together as teammates at the next level. All-South Coast Conference First Team choice Michael Alcaraz and All-SCC Second Teamer Yeyson Caballeros each earned scholarships to attend NCAA Division III Manhattanville College in New York.
Alcaraz and Caballeros were key players on a Lancers' team last year that relied on defense, allowing only 1.90 goals against per game in 21 matches. PCC placed fourth in the South Coast Conference with a 6-3-5 league mark, holding opponents to just 1.43 goals per match.
Alcaraz, who had four assists offensively, was often the team's top player in kick-outs and frequently broke up potential scoring plays by opponents. He was also effective on throw-ins on the offensive side. Caballeros, who scored two goals and added an assist, was a strong defender who and was involved in offensive set plays off of corner kicks.
The PCC pair joins a Valiants program that won the Freedom Conference regular season title in each of the last two seasons under head coach Gregg Miller.
Both two-year lettermen for the Lancers, Caballeros (from Fairfax High) was a member of PCC head coach Edgar Manvelyan's first Lancer team in 2010. Alcaraz, a product of Burbank High, was a starter in each of his two seasons ('11-12). Alcaraz recently picked up the school's Horrell Scholarship award for outstanding athletic achievement and sportsmanship.
