Three PCC Football Players Headed To Next Level
Pasadena City College 2012 football lettermen Jase To'omalatai and Keyon Austin and 2011 alum Khambrell Gomez will each continue their education and playing careers at the 4-year university level.
To'omalatai, who earned the PCC athletics Thomas O. Mallory scholarship and was a starting offensive linemen this past season, will attend the University of Sioux Falls (South Dakota), a NCAA Division II institution. Sioux Falls finished 9-2 last season, making the jump from NAIA when it was a four-time, national champion. To'omalatai, a 6-foot-2, 285-pounder, attended Kahuku High (Hawaii) before coming to PCC.
Austin and Gomez are joining three other Lancers' alumni after gaining scholarships to Adams State University (Colorado), also a Division II college. Austin, a two-year performer under PCC head coach Fred Fimbres, made 32 tackles and led the Lancers in pass breakups with four during his sophomore season. Austin attended Miami Carol City Senior High (Florida) and is the younger brother of former PCC 2011 defensive back Tyrell Austin, now a senior at Virginia Union U.
Gomez, a defensive lineman who originally signed with Virginia Union last year, will now join Keyon Austin and fellow former PCC gridiron teammates--linebacker Grant Haggard, defensive back Cariel Brooks, and offensive lineman Dante Moses--on the Grizzlies' 2013 roster.
Five sophomores (out of 12 overall) and one freshman have now earned university scholarships from the '12 team. Fifteen players have moved on thus far in the past two seasons under Fimbres' watch despite low sophomore numbers in each season.
"It's a process to not only try to move players to the next level but bring our program a consistent flow of returning players," Fimbres said. "We had to rush to put a team on the field in 2011 as I got the job late. Last year was my first true recruiting season, and now we are establishing a larger group of returning talent. Ultimately, we will have a larger 4-year signing class each year and return PCC back to its rich history of sending players to universities throughout the nation."
