National Pre-Season Ranking (No. 27) For PCC Football

National Pre-Season Ranking (No. 27) For PCC Football image

After last having a winning season in 2008, the Pasadena City College football team is looking to top the .500 mark this year under third-year head coach Fred Fimbres. The Dirty Thirty Juco Rankings are also banking on a winning season for the Lancers in placing them No. 27 on their national pre-season poll.

It's the first time that the Lancers have been nationally ranked in the eight years of the Dirty Thirty, which includes NJCAA and California Community College teams. PCC last made a national ranking when it was No. 22 on the final 2002 JC Grid-Wire poll, a year in which the Lancers finished 8-3 and were participants in the Potato Bowl.

Among Southern California Football Association (SCFA) affiliated teams, the Lancers are eighth on the Dirty Thirty with Riverside City College topping that group at No. 2. Mississippi Gulf Coast Community College is the nation's pre-season No. 1 squad.

"I'd like to think we have the talent and capability to be a winner this season," said Fimbres, who was thrilled with the news of the ranking. "We had a number of crushing injuries last year to so many key players, and it seemed like we couldn't go two straight games without someone going down. We played better in the last three weeks, but we happen to be in arguably the toughest division in the SCFA--the National Northern Conference."

PCC finished 2-8 (picking up a forfeit win from vacated state champion Bakersfield) last year, but in the two-year shuffle of freshmen-sophomores in community college football, programs can turn around quickly.
