PCC Women Cross Country Runner-Up At Foothill Invitational
The Pasadena City College women's cross country team took second place out of 10 teams at the 9th Foothill Invitational meet held Friday at Guasti-Cucamonga Park in Ontario. The Lancers placed three runners in the top 15 out of 93 overall participating racers.
Leading that group was Lancers freshman Tansica Sunkamaneevongse, who placed fifth overall with a time of 19:26 over the 5-kilometer course. She continued her weekly duel for top Lancer with sophomore Christina Shamirian, who settled for 12th at 19:53. Kailadnni Chavez, a sophomore, hit the finish line in 15th at 20:09.
Other PCC finishers were freshmen Brenda Grate in 22nd (20:46), Emely Garcia in 27th (21:03), Edna Bailon in 30th (21:16), Ashley Medina in 32nd (21:21), Marina Flores in 44th (22:01), and Kate Manzke in 47th (22:33).
"In this race, we had all nine runners for us finish in the top half of the field," said PCC head coach Armand Crespo. "That's pretty impressive no matter who you are going up against. Tansica's run established her among the state's best. I really like the way our squad is improving. Chavez is starting to close the gap with our premier two and that sets us up as we prepare for the late-season big 3 meets."
Moorpark College won the Foothill meet behind individual champion Rachel Naumann with a remarkable 18:16 time.
MEN 3RD AT FOOTHILL
Brendan Greene led eight PCC harriers to finish in the top 50 as the Lancers placed third out of 11 teams at the Foothill Invitational.
Over the 4-mile course, Greene cracked the top 10 (100 overall runners) in ninth place at 21:42.
The rest of the Pasadena racers finished as follows: Ruben Torres in 18th (22:18), David Moreno in 22nd (22:25), Russell Yu in 30th (22:43), Chris Alagala in 32nd (22:54), Pedro Lopez in 41st (23:17), Abraham Esparza in 45th (23:29), Bryce Van Ross in 47th (23:33), and Sergio Andrade in 61st (24:05).
San Bernardino Valley won the event with Omar Caro the only runner to break 20 minutes at 19:50.
"I liked the improvement here for some runners like Torres and Moreno, who are both freshmen," Crespo said. "The men's team has been sort of under the radar, but that's okay. What counts is how well we continue our improvement with the target of finishing high when we reach the conference meet."
The Lancers will be in action Saturday, Sept. 28 in the Cal State University-San Bernardino Invitational held at the Los Angeles Sheriff training facility in Devore.
