Scoreless Drought Over, Macintosh Steps Up With Hat Trick In Women's Soccer Road Win
After five games, Pasadena City College women's soccer head coach Reggie Rivas wondered aloud if someone would become a "hero" for his team. The Lancers had just one goal in five matches going into their non-conference game at Mt. San Jacinto Tuesday.
Freshman forward Helena Macintosh answered the coach's call...and then some. Macintosh broke a PCC scoreless streak that had reached 348 minutes when she scored just before the halftime whistle. The Arcadia High product then knocked in two more goals in the second half to complete a natural hat trick and help the Lancers defeat the host Eagles, 3-1.
PCC evened its record at 2-2-2. Macintosh's three goals were recorded in just a 5-minute play span in the two halves.
Macintosh was assisted by sophomore defender Alexandra Martinez on the initial goal, the first one this month by PCC and first since Amanda Papac scored in the team's 1-0 win over West Valley on Aug. 31.
In the second half, Macintosh didn't take long to score goal No. 2 when she fired in a free kick from 45 yards out in the 47th minute. She made it 3-0 Lancers in the 50th minute in driving in a 25-yard shot.
Lancers letterman goalie Tatiana Sanchez made seven saves, including a great stop on a penalty kick by MSJC's Leandra Garlinger in the 12th minute. She just missed out on the shutout when Dimitra Tsambasis scored in the final minute.
"It was just a matter of time before we scored one," Rivas said. "Sounds like a bad cliche, but it's really true because we know we have played well even in those scoreless duels. Helena happened to be that player who stepped up. More important than scoring is that we won, and on the road, so that helps in the postseason power points. We are pumped to start South Coast Conference play."
PCC does just that on Tuesday, Oct. 1 when it travels to face El Camino College for the conference opener. Game time is 4 p.m.
