While the Pasadena City College women's water polo team is having a hard season, freshman goalie Alenoush Aslanin has made great strides in improved play that has impressed head coach Terry Stoddard.

"There are plenty of factors for why we've struggled this year, but some key freshmen are giving us reason to think the future could be bright by next year," Stoddard said. "We've worked with Alenoush to be more aggressive and more anticipatory defending the cage. Now, we're seeing her go up and block shots and make saves she wasn't doing earlier in the year. She's been one of our best players over the latter part of the year."

Aslanin was spectacular in a 21-18 loss at Los Angeles Trade Tech in a South Coast Conference match played October 31. Aslanin made 11 saves, blocking three point-blank opportunities, three shots on Trade Tech power plays, and even stopping a penalty shot attempt.  Aslanin (from Glendale High) has recorded 125 saves this year, many over the last 10 matches.

Against Trade Tech, Caroline Liu stepped up with six goals, Camille Saurenman scored a season-best four goals, and Scarlett Bonilla added four goals and a team season-best nine steals in a strong overall performance.

On November 1 in the 11th Pasadena Mini Tournament, the Lancers were defeated by San Diego Miramar, 13-3, and lost to Santa Monica, 15-2. Stephanie Velasco scored all five PCC goals in the two matches and leads the team in scoring with 56 goals and in steals with 53.

Mariana Silva, who was honored in a pre-game tribute as the team's only sophomore prior to the Miramar match, has 20 goals and 20 assists in her final Lancers season.

PCC will close out the 2013 season as it hosts the South Coast Conference Championships at the Aquatic Center on Thursday-Saturday, Nov. 7-9. The Lancers are 2-22 overall and keeping hope of winning a conference match at the tourney after an 0-8 dual season thus far.
