Volleyball Set For Nov. 20 Home Showdown v. El Camino For SCC Title
The schedule maker for the South Coast Conference couldn't have done a better job than to slate the women's volleyball conference finale match between state No. 14-ranked Pasadena City College and No. 12 El Camino. The two teams carry 12-1 first-place league records into their showdown for the SCC title on Wednesday, Nov. 20. First serve is 6 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers won their ninth straight match Friday, rallying from a set down to defeat feisty Cerritos College, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 25-22, in Norwalk. El Camino's sweep over East Los Angeles set up next week's showdown. Last season, PCC and the Warriors shared the conference title. In 2010-11, El Camino won the championship after the Lancers went undefeated to win the crown in 2009.
Against Cerritos, PCC outside hitter Nora To'omalatai, a candidate for all-state/region, slammed 20 kills, made 16 digs, and served three aces to lead her team to the triumph. Sophomore setter Tiffany Roesler, who has quietly been among the state leaders in assists, dished out 54 assists and contributed her season-high of 16 digs. Letterman libero Victoria Arreola added 18 digs and sophomore outside hitter Thula Parks powered a double-double with 15 kills and 15 digs.
Freshman middle blocker Kendra Logan chipped in six kills, four aces and three blocks while fellow first-year MB Angela Banuelos had nine kills and two blocks. Right side sophomore hitter Briana Hilton totaled eight kills, seven digs, two aces and two blocks. Cerritos was led by Jasmynne Roberts with 23 kills and 17 digs.
In the fourth set, the Lancers, who were forced to go five in their first meeting with the Falcons, fell behind 21-19. PCC broke a 22-22 tie on back-to-back To'omalatai kills. Parks served an ace for match point to prevent another possible 5-set endeavor.
"Maybe it's for the best that Cerritos gave us fits," said PCC interim head coach Bill Sanchez. "It's another reminder that you have to take every opponent as if they can knock you off. We're thinking about El Camino and Cerritos took the first set and put us in a hole. Well, we came back and now we have to come up with our best effort to win conference. You can bet ECC is gunning for us."
In the opening encounter, PCC shocked the host Warriors in four sets. PCC's only loss in conference was to Mt. San Antonio when the team played without Logan and was forced to alter a few player's positions. With Logan, the Lancers swept Mt. SAC in the rematch a week ago.
