Good Start To Irvine Tourney For State No. 7 Women's Cagers
Currently No. 7 ranked on the state poll, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team romped to an 83-51 victory over San Diego City to open the Irvine Valley Tournament on Thursday.
The Lancers (5-2) won their fourth straight and advanced to face Rio Hondo in the Irvine semifinals at 5 p.m. Friday. Pasadena opened the SD City game with a 19-0 run capped by Skai Thompson's layup and never looked back.
All 12 Lancers who played scored baskets with sophomore center Kaitlyn Parks leading the way on 14 points and 10 rebounds. Thompson, a transfer guard, added 12 points, eight rebounds, six assists and four steals while reserve center Bailey Williams had 10 points (4-for-5 shooting) and blocked three shots.
Sophomore point guard Desiree Loving did her part with nine points, eight assists, and five rebounds. Backup sophomore forward Averie-Alice Guzman (pictured in an early season game) contributed nine points and reserve guard Tyler Polk tallied eight points.
If PCC gets by Rio Hondo, the Lancers would play the championship against either state No. 1-ranked Long Beach City or No. 20 Irvine Valley, a team PCC has already faced twice in tournament play (1-1 v. the host Lasers). Saturday's final is slated for 4 p.m.
