No. 7 Women's Basketball To Face No. 1 LBCC In Irvine Finals
The Pasadena City College women's basketball team is one step away from winning a second straight tournament, but it will be a giant step to take. After defeating Rio Hondo, 68-54, Friday in the semifinals, the No. 7-rated Lancers will battle state No. 1-ranked Long Beach City College Saturday, Dec. 7 at 4 p.m. in the championship final of the Irvine Valley Tournament.
Winners of five straight games, the Lancers (6-2) relied on the paint play of sophomore center Kaitlyn Parks (pictured), who scored 19 points on 9-for-13 shooting and added 12 rebounds. Sophomore point guard Desiree Loving just missed a double-double in scoring 15 points with nine assists, four rebounds and three steals.
On the defensive end, transfer guard Skai Thompson made seven of the team's 17 steals and tallied 12 points with six assists and four rebounds. PCC's defense was alarge factor as the team led 17-5 through nearly 11 minutes played in the first half. Rio Hondo got to as close as 31-28 early in the second half, but the Lancers responded with a 13-2 run to put the game away.
Long Beach (7-0) defeated host Irvine Valley, 60-48, in the other semifinal to set up this key matchup of early-season powers. The teams will face each other again in the South Coast Conference on Jan. 31 at Long Beach.
