Men's Basketball On 4-Game Win Streak

For the second time this season, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team has put together a 4-game winning streak. The Lancers opened the Imperial Valley College Holiday Classic with a 73-67 triumph over San Diego Miramar Friday.

With a 10-4 record, PCC is off to its best start to a season since 2003-04 when it was 10-3 on its way to a 22-win campaign and a trip to the second round of the regional playoffs. It's the finest opening act to a season in the tenure of Lancers head coach Michael Swanegan, who is directing PCC in his seventh season at the college.

Despite winning 20 games in 2008-2009 under Swanegan, PCC did not earn a postseason spot. Swanegan's 2011-12 team went 16-12, finished second place in the South Coast Conference North Division and also was denied a playoff berth. The Lancers have not been in the postseason since '03-04, the last season the team played under the retired George Terzian.

PCC trailed Miramar, 29-28, at halftime but scored 45 points in the second half to post the opening round win. Sophomore transfer forward Taj Spencer scored 21 points and grabbed eight rebounds while second-year point guard Jeffrey Dockett also poured in 21 points and added three assists. Sophomore guard Brandon Joseph contributed eight points, six rebounds, two assists and two steals in a strong all-around effort. Frosh center Faruk Oyalade totaled a team-high 11 rebounds.

The Lancers face host Imperial Valley, a 102-80 winner over Barstow, in the tourney championship semifinals Saturday, Dec. 28 at 7 p.m. If PCC defeats Imperial Valley, it would face the winner of Glendale (Arizona) v. Fullerton on Sunday, Dec. 29 in the championship final at 3 p.m. A loss would put the Lancers in the third place final at 1 p.m.
