Not Baseball's Day v. LA Mission

Feeling good about itself following its doubleheader sweep over Cerro Coso Saturday, the Pasadena City College baseball team went back to Brookside Park's Jackie Robinson Memorial Field with confidence as it faced Tuesday's opponent Los Angeles Mission College.

Even after Mission scored two runs in the top of the first, PCC sent up its hot-hitting rightfielder Steven San Miguel to the plate to begin the Lancers' offensive attack. San Miguel drove a ball to the left-center field gap that appeared earmarked for a double. Instead, Mission leftfielder Aaron Watkins made a sensational diving catch worthy of ESPN Sportscenter's Top Plays.

While just one out in 27, Watkins' grab took the sails out of the Lancers as the Eagles seized the momentum. The rest of the game was all Mission as the Lancers were limited to two hits and committed five errors on defense in a forgettable 17-0 defeat.

The Eagles' designated hitters Austin Rodriguez and Conner O'Brien combined to go 5-for-5 with five RBI. Rodriguez slugged a 2-run homer and a double. PCC pitchers were touched for 18 hits.

The Lancers (3-5 overall) received a first-inning single by centerfielder PJ DeZotell and, after seven no-hit innings, picked up a single in the ninth by reserve rightfielder Dylan Kicken. PCC's most effective pitchers were late relievers Jeffrey Cortez (two innings, one run) and Zach Britt (1-2-3 ninth).

"The guy makes that amazing catch on San Miguel, then Bobby Fraijo lines out to center and we got nothing to show for it," PCC head coach Evan O'Meara said. "Things went spiraling badly for us the rest of the way. We just have to turn the page on this one."

The left-handed hitting San Miguel is coming off a week in which he batted .471 (8-for-17) and put together four straight 2-hit games.

The Lancers won't play again until Tuesday, Feb. 18 when they host Grossmont in a 2 p.m. opening pitch.
