DuBose Sets PCC WBB Playoff Rebound Record In 77-59 Win Over COC

DuBose Sets PCC WBB Playoff Rebound Record In 77-59 Win Over COC image

Sophomore forward Brandi DuBose set a Pasadena City College women's basketball playoff record by grabbing 18 rebounds to go with her team-high 13 points in the host No. 4-seeded Lancers 77-59, Southern California Regional Round 2 victory over No. 13 College of the Canyons Saturday night.

Pasadena (22-7) will host fellow South Coast Conference foe and No. 5 seed Long Beach City (25-4), a 70-54 winner over Mt. San Jacinto, on Wednesday, Mar. 5 in Round 3 of the regionals.

DuBose broke the previous record held by Easter Faafiti of 17 rebounds made in a 2009 playoff win over San Bernardino Valley. The Lancers improved their impressive Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium postseason record to 19-1.

DuBose, who had 10 rebounds by halftime, was 6-for-11 from the field and finished with eight of her boards on the offensive end. Sophomore guard Tyler Crockom tied DuBose for team-high honors in points with 13 to go with eight assists and six rebounds.

Freshman guard Kiara Phillips tallied 12 points off the bench and added four steals and four assists. Phillips sank two of the team's six 3-pointers. Sophomore guard Skai Thompson also made a pair of 3s as part of her 11 points (and seven rebounds) while sophomore point guard Desiree Loving had 11 points and four assists. Sophomore center Kaitlyn Parks just missed a double-double on 10 points and nine rebounds.

Pasadena limited the region's scoring leader Keiona Mathews to 19 points (averaged 25 a game) and no other Cougars player reached double figures in scoring. Canyons closed the season at 13-15.

Notorious for slow starts in home playoff games, the Lancers were quiet as COC jumped out to a 13-4 lead and then an 18-9 advantage on a Shawn Kolani 3-pointer with 13:10 left in the first half.

PCC awoke in a hurry as the team went on a 10-0 run capped by a Tyler Crockom layup to take a 19-18 lead. The teams traded leads until Crockom again hit a basket for a 25-24 Lancers' lead with 5:25 left in the half. The Lancers went on a 20-3 spurt and an 18-point lead by halftime, 44-26. COC would not recover.

The Lancers shot .421 from the field (32 of 76 attempts), significant in that it was the best PCC has shot in a playoff game since 2010.

PCC will have it tough when it faces Long Beach. In SCC play, the Lancers defeated the Vikings, 77-70, in overtime. That was the second time that the teams went to the 5-minute extra period as PCC also defeated LBCC, 69-64, in the championship final of the Irvine Valley Tournament.
