State Defending Champ De Anza Downs Badminton, 13-8
The Pasadena City College women's badminton team received a visit from the defending CCCAA champions from Northern California, De Anza College on Wednesday. The Lancers played the Dons tough, but De Anza prevailed, 13-8, in the non-conference match at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
Preline Bonifacio, PCC's No. 4 singles player, won a pair of 3-set, marathon thrillers. Bonifacio downed De Anza No. 3 Lori Ng, 16-21, 21-19, 21-19, then beat No. 4 Olivia Lam, 21-7, 14-21, 21-14. Bonifacio (from Pasadena High) also teamed with Carmina Ortiz in No. 1 doubles for a win over De Anza's No. 2 pair of Phoebe Wong and Lam, 21-12, 21-19.
"Preline has quietly made big improvements," said PCC head coach Bill Sanchez. "She's the reason why the score was a lot closer than I think even De Anza felt it might be. More teams could benefit from playing more non-conference matches. Playing a top team like De Anza was great competition and could help us later in conference."
De Anza's state singles and doubles champion Pinky Li only played doubles and showed her pedigree by teaming with Christina Ja for wins over Ortiz-Bonafacio, 21-3, 21-2, and over Lancers' No. 2 doubles pair of Chloe Ding and Purdy Wang, 21-5, 21-10. Ding-Wang won their contest against Wong-Lam, 21-15, 21-19.
Also for the Lancers, No. 5 singles Alejandra Palacios and No. 6 Yingwen Lin each won one of their two matches.
PCC is 3-3 overall. De Anza stays undefeated at 5-0.
