Seven swimmers had better seed times in the 200-yard freestyle than Pasadena City College freshman Mohammad Esmaeilian as the final heat took place Saturday at the 14th Pasadena Invitational. By the end of the heat, it was Esmaeilian, from the eighth lane, who scored an improbable but stirring win in the event in a personal-best time of 1 minute, 45.13 seconds.

Esmaeilian's victory was the highlight of the meet as the Lancers placed 10th out of 15 teams with 114 points. Mt. San Antonio won the team title in the meet that took place April 4-5 at the PCC Aquatic Center.

Esmaeilian also won the meet's Crescendo Award with the combined fastest collective time in the 50, 100 and 200 freestyle events. Esmaeilian finished 10th overall in the 50 (22.28) and was third in the 100 (47.41).

Lancer Ryan Caceres swam to 14th place in the grueling 1,650 freestyle in 20:24.20. PCC was ninth in the 400 freestyle relay (3:36.75) with swimmers Ethan Nava, Esmaeilian, Victor Torres and Brendan Lee.

"Mohammad's best events had been the 50 and 100 sprints, but I felt he could do well in the 200," said PCC head coach Terry Stoddard. "It's rare to win from the eighth lane and against such a strong field. He's got the confidence now to know he can compete with the best in all three events."
