LA Pierce Stuns Women's Hoops, Ends Lancers' 7-Game Win Streak
Off to its best start to a season in six years, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team had thoughts of the 2006-2007 season when the Lancers set a school record with a 28-game win streak. One-fourth of that isn't bad but state No. 5-ranked PCC will have to settle for a 7-game win streak after unranked Los Angeles Pierce College pulled off a 64-52 upset at the 15th Rose City Classic Saturday evening.
This year's Rose City is a round-robin, 6-team tourney as PCC finishes the event with a 4 p.m. game Sunday v. No. 18 College of the Canyons. In other Saturday games, West Los Angeles downed MiraCosta, 78-74, while Canyons routed College of the Desert, 95-66.
Pierce (9-2) was led by center Gasia Sarkis, who nearly hit a triple-double as she scored 23 points, grabbed 11 rebounds, and gave the Lancers' offense fits by blocking nine shots. Guard Kameron Jones added 22 points and 11 rebounds.
The Lancers shot miserably from the floor, making just 24 percent of their attempts (18 of 75). Sophomore guard Shay Jackson led PCC with 13 points, four steals and three assists while letterman guard Stella Ghazarian added 11 points (missed 15 of 18 shots from the floor). Starting guard-forward Sabrina Martinez chipped in eight points, six steals and three assists. Freshman forward Sarah Jackson pulled down 10 rebounds off the bench (plus two points). Frosh center Kaitlyn Parks followed her double-double v. West LA, getting into a foul trouble (four) and totaling just four points and eight rebounds.
PCC trailed 32-27 at halftime, then closed the gap to one, 33-32, on a Jackson fast-break layup a minute into the second half. From that point, it was all Pierce as the Brahmas went on an 11-2 run and then a 13-5 run that capped the upset.
