Caleb Wood Opens PCC Men's Track and Field Season With 2 Event Triumphs
After being named the South Coast Conference Field Athlete of the Year last season, sophomore thrower Caleb Wood is trying to make an encore. Wood began the 2013 Pasadena City College men's track and field season Friday by winning two events at the Mt. SAC Season Opener meet held at Mt. San Antonio College.
Wood, from Beaumont High, won the javelin with a throw of 49.49 meters to outdistance Salvador Hernandez of Mt. SAC at 48.58. Wood also took first place in the discus with a toss of 37.76 meters.
PCC's other event victory at Mt. SAC was turned in by the 4x400 relay team. In fact, the Lancers have so much depth in relays they were able to win all three heats of the event. The team of Patrick MacMullen (Damien High, All-San Gabriel Valley Area sprinter), Vivaswan Shetty (Logan High, Union City), Sergio Andrade (Knight High, Palmdale), and Chineek Favors (Gunderson High, San Jose) won the event and heat No. 2 with a time of 3:27.78.
The squad of Tywon White (Carson High), Christian White (Laurel High, Maryland), Fharhaad Zinnamon (Sunrise Mountain, Nevada) and Bryant Johnson (Allen High, Texas) won heat No. 3 and placed third overall at 3:28.84. Finally, the team of Shian Hale (Rancho Cucamonga), Kymoni Bellamy (Carson), Aaron Harris (Long Beach Poly), and Keiton Winston (Carlton High, Michigan) won heat No. 1, but only finished in eighth at 3:34.22.
Tywon White placed second in the 400 meters with a time of 51.89 seconds while Kameron Burch (Pasadena High) won his heat in the event and took fourth overall at 52.87. Francis Lee (Arcadia) was second in the 3,000 steeplechase (10:15.60) and Te'von Mitchell (Dorsey) placed third in the 400 hurdles at 58 seconds flat. Mitchell was the LA City Section champion in the boys 300 hurdles last year. Alex Tapia (Azusa High) came in third in the shot put at 11.90 meters. Derrick Shepherd (Marshall Fundamental) was fourth in the 100 meters at 11.29 seconds.
Other solid showings were turned in by Kevin Cano (Montebello High), fourth in 3,000 meters, 9:23.13; Favors, fourth in 400 hurdles, 58.78; Hale, fifth in same event, 59.38; Gabriel Rodarte (Los Altos), fifth in the 100, 11.89; Zinnamon, sixth in the long jump, 6.31 meters; and Chris Paidimukkala (Eagle Rock), eighth in the 3,000 steeplechase.
PCC is carrying a roster of more than 40 student-athletes as PCC third-year head coach Larry Wade and distance runners assistant Armand Crespo are positioning the Lancers to beat last year's third-place finish in the SCC and compete for a high place at the CCCAA state championships.
"We're shooting to do better in the sprint races while maintaining our strength with Wood in the throws," Wade said. "We want to improve every year and bring this program back to being one of the preeminent ones in the state. The potential and our high numbers are there for us to do well."
PCC will next participate in the Cerritos College Invitational Feb. 15-16.
