Exhibit: VICTORIA CALABRO, "Sentimental Spit Shine"

EXHIBITION: OCTOBER 12 - NOVEMBER 16, 2012 An installation by Brooklyn-based artist Victoria Calabro opened on the evening of October 12 at the Pasadena City College Art Gallery. “Sentimental Spit Shine” features cast and hot worked glass objects as part of a colorful immersive environment that includes extensive use of faux-grass carpeting. Many of Calabro’s recent glass sculptures take the form of picture frames that appear to have wilted or melted. Writer Lindsay Lowe describes these as “solid works that give the illusion of heat and viscosity,” which “would not look out of place in Dalí’s The Persistence of Memory” as they “ooze over the edges of tables and slide down walls.” Calabro’s artwork has been exhibited in museums and galleries across the United States, including works currently on exhibition at the New Mexico Museum of Art. Born in Houston, Texas, much of her early life was spent living in Saudi Arabia. She holds an undergraduate degree from Indiana University and an MFA in Fine Art from New York University. She currently lives and works in Brooklyn, New York....
