English as a Second Language and Civics Education

The English as a Second Language (ESL) program was recognized as one of four (out of 50+) college programs in California as the highest performing agencies in California. It is the largest program at CEC with 55% of the student population.

The program includes over 40 instructors and 38 Noncredit ESL sections of instruction in basic literacy skills, lifeskills, and workskills student outcomes in the English language and culture. The program includes 5 levels from Beginning ESL to Advanced.

Individuals whose primary language is not English prepare with courses in conversation, advanced listening, speaking, pronunciation, reading, writing, and grammar, which are offered at pre-intermediate through advanced levels.

Adult Basic Education

ABE is a non-credit program of self-improvement designed to improve basic skills for students whose abilities range from non-literate to pre-college level. Development of reading, writing, and math skills are emphasized, as well as life skills, employability, and technology.
