The Center for the Arts
Now Pasadena City College and these two programs have the extraordinary opportunity to build a new Center for the Arts which will house both programs and provide both instructional and performance facilities in the heart of the campus. The 62,000 square foot facility will encompass art studios, practice rooms, laboratories, classrooms, offices and performance spaces. It will have all the arts under one roof, creating a synergy for students and faculty that heretofore did not exist.
The majority of funding for this building will be provided by voter approved construction bonds. However, three crucial elements of this building, which will complete it academically and aesthetically, remain to be funded. These are: the Art Gallery, the Recital Hall and the Black Box Theater.
The Art Gallery
Art Practice without a proper place of display does not achieve its highest purpose. The proposed Art Gallery is central to the instructional purposes of the program by providing a place for the display of students' work, as well as the work of professional artists with visiting exhibitions. It will offer flexibility of design and utilization that does not now exist on campus and will become a gathering place for students, faculty and the community to view the finest student and professional artworks and to examine and discuss issues surrounding the visual arts.
The Recital Hall
A 220-240 seat hall will provide the campus' first location for small venue performances by students, faculty, visiting artists and others, as well as serving instructional purposes. Its acoustics and design will be of the highest quality, enhancing the performance experience. It will be conveniently located for the public, thus serving an important community need.
The Black Box Theater
The theater will provide a much needed performance space for the Theater Arts Department. The flexibility built into the theater will provide space for a more varied and extensive instructional program. Student actors and technicians will be able to offer outstanding theatrical productions to the campus and community.
