Virtual Prototyping: Modeling and dynamic analysis of mechanical systems using CAD and engineering simulation software. Kinematic simulation of machine components including gears, cams and mechanical linkage; application of forces, accelerations and motion drivers to CAD models; analysis of the kinetics of mechanical systems, the transmission of mechanical power and resultant forces; design evaluation; use of the Internet to publish charts and reports about simulations. No credit if taken after Drftg 109C. Total of 36 hours lecture and 108 hours laboratory.
 
DRFTG 111 COMPUTER-AIDED ENGINEERING (CAE) 4.0
Prerequisite: Enrollment in or completion of Drftg 110.
Applied mechanics and strength of materials analysis for mechanical design using basic analytic solutions and Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software. Linear, static analysis of the action of forces on machine parts; application of strength of materials criteria under conditions of axial loading, bending, shear and torsion; computation of stresses and elastic deformations; application of factor of safety and serviceability criteria to mechanical design and selection of materials; design optimization based on analysis results. No credit if taken after Drftg 116B. Total of 36 hours lecture and 108 hours laboratory.
 
DRFTG 112 MECHANICAL DESIGN PRACTICUM 4.0
Prerequisite: Enrollment in or completion of Drftg 111.
Practices and considerations in mechanical design. Application of modeling, simulation, analysis and documentation of mechanical designs in the context of the engineering design cycle; feasibility studies, cost considerations, concurrent engineering principles; practical design considerations coupled with case studies. No credit if taken after Drftg 116E. Total of 36 hours lecture and 108 hour laboratory.
