News: Men'S Cagers Receive Technical Knockout
Newly ranked No. 15 in this week's state poll, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team hoped to keep its hot streak alive against No. 20 Cerritos College Wednesday night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. But home advantage turned into home nausea as the Lancers couldn't get on track offensively while the referees whistled them for a surprising four technical fouls in a 72-61 loss to the Falcons.
PCC's five-game win streak was snapped as it fell to 17-6 and 5-2 in South Coast Conference games. The Lancers also lost sole possession of first place in the SCC North Division as they are now tied with East Los Angeles for the top spot, each with 5-2 conference records.
The four Ts, two on PCC's coaching bench, led to eight charity free throws by Cerritos (13-8, 6-1 in the SCC South). Cerritos made 22-for-28 (78.6 percent) from the line compared to the Lancers 13-for-16 (81.3 percent).
Poor shooting hurt the Lancers as they shot only 33.3 percent from the field, 31 percent in the second half. Cerritos dominated the rebounding department, grabbing 55 boards to just 38 by the PCC.
Lancers' sophomore forward Taj Spencer scored 12 of his team-high 16 points in the second half and added seven rebounds overall. Frosh guard Jevon Shields added 12 points and three steals while first-year center Faruk Oyalade totaled seven points and a team-high 13 rebounds.
Cerritos was led by substitute starter Micah Winn, who scored 19 points (10-for-13 from the free throw line). He led five Falcons in double digits, including Jarion Henry who tallied 10 points and 16 rebounds. TJ Traylor added 12 points and 12 rebounds.
PCC trailed 19-7 and then 38-30 by halftime. In the second half, Winn made four technical free throws that upped Cerritos' advantage to 61-48 with 5:37 left in the game. The 13-point deficit proved too much for the Lancers.
PCC travels to face Long Beach City College on Friday, Jan. 31 in a 7 p.m. conference tip-off.
