The First Year Experience: Starting Students Right –
An Update by Dr. Brock Klein, Director, Teaching and Learning Center
Guided by our Educational Master Plan and the California Community College’s Student Success Task Force recommendations, PCC has embarked on an ambitious plan to provide first year students with an extended orientation to college (Math Jam), guaranteed full schedules in fall and spring (including math, English/ESL, and a student success course, College 1), and support outside the classroom (first year counselors, coaches, and tutors).
The First Year Experience (FYE) Pathway, Academic Athletic Zone Pathway, Veterans Learning Collaborative, Design Tech Pathway, International Student Pathway, CEC ESL Bridge, Ujima, and Puente are collaborating to develop resources and services for approximately 500 students in 2011-12 and more than 1000 students in 2012/13. Priority is given to in-district high school seniors.
The FYE Council, comprised of FYE program coordinators and key administrators and staff, meets monthly to discuss issues, solve problems, and learn about first year students and their instructors. The remaining meetings in Spring 2012 are April 9, May 14, and June 11 and take place in Circadian. Everyone is welcome to attend.
In addition to providing new students with a first year experience, faculty and staff from a variety of disciplines are developing and piloting Career Pathways, which will guide students with declared majors after their first year towards transfer and/or certificates.
