News: Undefeated Men'S Soccer Fit To Be Tied
When the Pasadena City College men's soccer team played to a 2-2 tie v. Chaffey College Tuesday in its Robinson Stadium home opener, it marked an interesting mark in the head coaching career of Lancers fourth-year head coach Edgar Manvelyan. For now, Manvelyan has more ties in his career, 22, than victories, 21.
The Lancers remain undefeated this season in four matches, but their 1-0-3 mark is not something they will brag about. Chaffey also stayed undefeated at 4-0-3.
Chaffey led 1-0 before PCC scored goals four minutes apart in the first half. First, Luis Flores received a pass from German Alfaro and fired a shot from 15 yards out to tie it in the 16th minute. Then, Rodolfo Munoz knocked in a header shot off a sideline throw-in by Zack Larson in the 20th minute for a 2-1 Lancers' lead.
Chaffey would acquire the tying goal in the 59th minute as Samer Kandah took a pass from Bryan Guzman and hit the center of the net from 12 yards out.
In the 61st minute, Flores nearly scored but his corner kick hit the crossbar.
"We've been missing our intended starting lineup for various reasons," Manvelyan said. "We will have really strong pushes on offense where we look unstoppable. Other times, we can't connect on passes deep in the other's team's zone. It's frustrating because we have a very good team and we should have more than one win right now. Chaffey is an outstanding team too, so I can't be unhappy to finish in a tie."
Munoz, a freshman defender out of Muir High, frosh defender Max Rico, and Flores were three players with strong performances v. Chaffey. Flores, a sophomore forward from Pasadena High, has a team-leading four goals in only three matches he's played.
On Friday, Sept. 20, the Lancers visit Santa Ana College in a 1 p.m. non-conference match.
