The Pasadena City College women’s soccer team used a relentless attack that resulted in a 1-0, South Coast Conference victory that was far more lopsided than the score indicated. The win gives the Lancers a 3-3-2 South Coast Conference record and evens their overall mark at 5-5-4 overall.

PCC spent most of the game on the opposite end of the field, outshooting the Warriors, 30-4. Despite the barrage, El Camino’s goalkeeper Krisyn Houts was able to stop the match from getting out of hand by collecting 16 saves, many from close range.

The game’s single goal came on a header from freshman and top Lancers' defender Bailey Shaw (Monrovia High) in the 42nd minute. It was Shaw’s first goal of the season as she finished off an initial header by sophomore midfielder Cassandra Orozco after a corner kick from teammate and freshman forward Helena Macintosh.

Powered by the loud cheers of the team’s special guests, Girl Scout Brownie Troop 7051, PCC dominated the field, holding the Warriors to four shots all game. Three of those came during a second half in which El Camino had consecutive close-range shots in the final ten minutes.

Lancers' goalie Angie Ulmer was able to get her gloves on both of them, preserving the win. Ulmer (South Pasadena High) picked up her second consecutive shutout having only to make two saves.

Even though El Camino (0-11-3, 0-6-2) did not get very many opportunities to score, the Lancers defense was quick to collapse on the ball and neutralize threats when they were pressed.

PCC head coach Reggie Rivas was happy with the win, but would like to see more production from the team.

“We came out strong and aggressive but we just didn’t finish our chances,” he said. “We had plenty of chances to score and we didn’t capitalize on them. We have to continue to work on getting the ball in the back of the net. This is a good start to the second half of conference play, but we have to continue to achieve our goals so we might be able to reach the playoffs.”

Pasadena continues its trek through the SCC schedule when it faces East Los Angeles College at Robinson Stadium at 3 p.m. on Tuesday, Oct. 29.
