News: Women'S Volleyball Outblocks Long Beach
Using a season-high 12 block kills, the state No. 21-ranked Pasadena City College women's volleyball team improved to 2-0 in the South Coast Conference with a sweep over Long Beach City College, 25-20, 25-16, 25-11, Wednesday at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
PCC sophomore outside hitter Nora To'omalatai landed 10 of her match-high 18 attack kills in the opening set. Long Beach held eight leads in the game until PCC went ahead for good with a 9-1 run. The Lancers (4-7 overall) had trailed as late as 18-15.
LBCC (3-8, 0-2 in SCC play) held a 10-9 lead in the second set, but the Lancers again went on a spurt of 9-2 to take control. In the third game, PCC used a 12-2 run to finish off the sweep.
"We've been working on our blocking in practice, and we did a nice job of that v. Long Beach," said PCC interim head coach Bill Sanchez. "It took us a while to get going in that first set. From the time we started to really control the net, we controlled the rest of the match."
For PCC, sophomore outside hitter Thula Parks added 10 kills while freshman middle blocker Angela Banuelos made six kills and five blocks (three solos). Frosh middle blocker Kendra Logan totaled six blocks (one solo). For Long Beach, Lauren Moreno made 18 digs while Michaelah Brown and Megan Fruhwirth each totaled five kills.
