News: Badminton Extends SCC Winning Streak
A four-time defending champion of the South Coast Conference, the Pasadena City College women's badminton team extended its conference winning streak to 36 matches with a 20-1, SCC-opening victory at El Camino College Wednesday.
The Lancers (1-2 overall) haven't lost a conference match since the start of the 2010 season.
PCC's No. 1 singles player Angie Ortiz dropped El Camino's No. 1 Corinne Belandres, 21-7, 21-16, and rolled past No. 2 Callie Rodela, 21-7, 21-5, while teaming for two wins in doubles with fellow sophomore Grace Espinoza. The Ortiz-Espinoza unit played as No. 2 doubles and defeated Belandres-Rodela, 21-14, 21-17, and the Warriors' duo of Rebecca Maier and Brittany Brown, 21-1, 21-5.
Freshman Alice Liew, at No. 2 singles, lost a tough one to Belandres, 21-19, 21-12, (El Camino's lone team point) and beat Rodela, 21-10, 21-5. Liew teamed with Shaghig Avedisian at PCC No. 1 doubles to down Belandres-Rodela, 21-16, 21-12, and Maier-Brown, 21-8, 21-4.
Espinoza, (pictured) at No. 3 singles, No. 4 Avedisian, No. 5 Alyssa Boyt, and No. 6 Alejandra Palacios each won two singles matches in straight sets. Boyt-Palacios won their lone No. 3 doubles in beating Bryar Cochran and Beanna O'Dell, 21-17, 21-5.
"We put that North tournament behind us and played much better from top to bottom in the conference opener," said PCC head coach Bill Sanchez. "The sophomores are showing the freshmen about the pride factor that we have in wanting to continue our conference success. We're shooting for a fifth straight title, so this was a great way to begin."
On Friday, March 15, the Lancers visit East Los Angeles College for a 2 p.m. conference match.
