Though head coach Bill Sanchez decided to rest some of his top players, the Pasadena City College women’s badminton team proved it is a force to be reckoned with by defeating El Camino College-Compton Center, 20-1, at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium Wednesday. That makes it 38 consecutive conference wins for the Lancers.

PCC won its third straight this year and is 3-2 overall, 3-0 in the South Coast Conference.

Alyssa Boyt, Pasadena’s sophomore No. 1 player for this match, had two singles wins as well as a doubles victory with freshman partner Alejandra Palacios. Boyt defeated Compton’s No. 1 Martha Vega, 21-11, 19-21, 21-6, then swept Compton’s No. 2 performer Michelle Naranjo with two scores of 21-8. In their doubles match, the Lancers’ No. 1 pair of Boyt and Palacios defeated the No. 2 pair of Jessica Phillips and Trina Armstrong in straight sets, 21-17, 21-13.

Pasadena’s No. 4 player Sophia Njomin was kept on her toes when she faced the Tartars’ No. 4 player Marlene Monzon. In the first set, Njomin eked out a 22-20 win but was defeated in the second set, 15-21. In the deciding third set, Njomin gained some momentum and won, 21-8. Njomin teamed with Serena Yan in No. 2 doubles and rallied for a 11-21, 21-16, 21-16 win over Compton's No. 1 of Monzon-Vega.

Yan, Njomin, and Palacios won two singles matches each.

The Lancers’ only match loss came late in the contest when PCC’s No. 5 player and freshman Grace Park faced off against Compton’s No. 5 Armstrong. In the first set, Park kept it close but Armstrong ended up pulling away and went on for a 24-22, 21-10 sweep.

PCC will continue its three-game home stand at the HP Gym when it faces El Camino College (Torrance) at 3 p.m. on Friday, March 22.
