News: San Diego City Once Again Gets Best Of Badminton, 16-5
Sophomore Angie Ortiz did all she could for the Pasadena City College women's badminton team Wednesday, but one player does not make a team. Host San Diego City College stretched its winning streak to 19 matches and defeated the Lancers for the second straight year in the Southern California Championship final, 16-5.
PCC ended its team season at 10-5 overall and fell to 1-7 in its history in the SoCal finals. San Diego remained undefeated at 9-0 and will now face De Anza College in the CCCAA State Championship team final on Thursday, May 9 (at PCC's Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium).
Ortiz, the defending state champ in singles, handed SD City's No. 1 player Darby Duprat her first loss this season, 21-15, 21-11. Earlier, Ortiz was tactical in a 21-12, 21-7 triumph over SDCC's No. 2 player Sophia Tran. In No. 1 doubles, Ortiz and teammate Alice Liew beat Tran and Lena Van, 21-19, 21-14. The only blip for Ortiz on the day was when San Diego's No. 2 team of Duprat and Thao Nguyen outlasted the Ortiz-Liew pair, 22-20, 15-21, 21-14. Overall, Ortiz was responsible for four of the team's five points.
The only other Lancers' point was scored by Liew, who played well in a No. 2 singles battle with Tran, rallying for the win, 18-21, 21-16, 21-11. Liew gave Duprat a run as well, but lost to her 21-18, 21-19.
The defending state champion Knights set the tone early with five singles sweeps in round 1, then winning all three round 1 doubles to take a commanding 10-1 lead (need 11 for victory).
"I thought we battled them, but San Diego played extremely well, especially its bottom half of the ladder," PCC head coach Bill Sanchez said. "We didn't have the type of team season we thought we might after our opening individuals wins at the Grossmont Tournament. We played the best of the best in teams like De Anza, San Francisco, and even East Los Angeles and couldn't keep up. Now we have to focus on the individuals and maybe we can make some noise on our own court at state."
The Lancers will participate in the South Coast Conference Individuals Tournament on Friday, May 3 at the Manhattan Beach Badminton Club. Matches are scheduled to begin by 9:30 a.m. PCC will then be the host for the 2013 CCCAA State Championships Tournament from May 9-11.
