News: Angie Ortiz Wins SCC Individual Singles, Doubles Crowns Again
Pasadena City College women's badminton sophomore Angie Ortiz made it back-to-back seasons as the South Coast Conference individual singles and doubles champion after her performance Friday in the SCC Individual Championships Tournament held at Manhattan Beach Badminton Club.
Ortiz sailed through four sweeps in singles, capping her title by defeating El Camino College No. 1 player Corinne Belandres in the final, 21-12, 21-15. Belandres had been tough on Ortiz in a previous conference match that took Ortiz to three sets, but the CCCAA defending state champion picked up her game here to thwart Belandres in two.
Ortiz then teamed with freshman Alice Liew to win the SCC doubles crown, but in a finals battle that took three sets. After sweeping two easy earlier round matches, Ortiz-Liew took on East Los Angeles College's pair of Cherry Lai and Shirley Su. Ortiz-Liew recovered from a long middle set defeat to capture the doubles title, 21-12, 21-23, 21-8.
"Angie is determined to go after not just her state singles title of a year ago, but maybe challenge in doubles," PCC head coach Bill Sanchez said. "She's a special player and she once again established herself as the conference's best player. She has great court coverage and probably gets to some shots that a lot of players can't handle. We've had some great players over the years, but Angie is relentless and that's what separates her from the others. Her determination is something you want to capture in a bottle because it's so valuable to winning in any sport."
Liew advanced to the quarterfinals in singles before falling to ELAC's Lai in going the distance, 22-20, 15-21, 21-15.
Sanchez's players have now won six straight conference individual doubles crowns and five straight in singles. Ortiz is the first PCC repeat singles champ and joins current assistant coach Jessica Nguyen-Le (2010-2011) as the only Lancers' back-to-back conference doubles champions.
The Lancers will be well-represented at the upcoming CCCAA State Individual Championships that take place May 10-11 at PCC's Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium. Ortiz is joined by Liew (No. 5 seed), freshman Shaghig Avedisian (No. 6), and sophomore Alyssa Boyt in qualifying for singles. In state doubles, after Ortiz-Liew, the pair of Avedisian and Alejandra Palacios made it in as a No. 5 seed.
The CCCAA State Championships begins with the state team title match between SoCal champion San Diego City College and North region champ De Anza. Game time is 3 p.m. on Thursday, May 9 at the HP Gym.
