News: Rebuilding Time For Women's Badminton

For the first time since his first season at Pasadena City College in 2008, head coach Bill Sanchez doesn't have a dominant singles player to lead his squad. The Lancers are 5-time defending South Coast Conference champions and featured 2012 CCCAA state singles champ Angie Ortiz on the roster the last two seasons.

While the Lancers return three players from last season, Sanchez said his team will be led by newcomers in Carmina Ortiz (Azusa High), Yang "Chloe" Ding (from China), and Preline Bonifacio (Pasadena High). The frosh class also include the Lin sisters, Yinghong and Yingwen from Mark Keppel High, Min "Purdy" Wang (from China), Karina Bustillo (Phillippines), Priscilla Lam (China), and Wen "Veronica" Shen, one of five international students from China on the 2014 roster.

PCC returns sophomores Alejandra Palacios, the team's No. 5 player last year and a member of the No. 2 doubles team out of Azusa High, and Xiwei "Serena" Yan, (China) who was No. 6 on the ladder. The pair played in the 2013 SoCal championship match, a loss to San Diego City. Hee Won "Jamie" Chi (from South Korea) is the other letterman.

The Lancers officially opened the '14 season Friday in participating in the Grossmont Individual Tournament. Ding stood out as she captured the consolation singles trophy. Ding defeated teammates Bonafacio, 21-16, 21-12, and Yingwen Lin, 21-19, 21-17, before beating SD City's Trinh Lang, 21-15, 21-17, in the conso final match.

"We had a veteran team last year, but this year's team is really an inexperienced squad," Sanchez said. "The talent is there to do well, but it's going to take some hard practice work for the large freshmen class to improve. We're always going to be near the top in the SCC, but it's going to take a lot for us to rate with what we've seen from the PCAC. The fact is we've been very fortunate to have been led by such quality No. 1 players like an Angie Ortiz, Iris Xu or Priscilla Lun. All three were dominating players."

On Friday, Mar. 7, the Lancers will play their first dual match at defending CCCAA state team champion De Anza in Northern California's City of Cupertino. PCC will also participate in the Skyline Individual Tournament on Saturday, Mar. 8.
