News: Sixth SCC Title Defense Starts Well For Badminton

A five-time defending champion of the South Coast Conference, the Pasadena City College women's badminton team has endured a little more adversity of late thanks to last year's surprising tie for the title with East Los Angeles combined with one of the Lancers' most inexperienced rosters in 2014.

With a roster heavy with  freshmen, the Lancers still dominated host El Camino College-Compton Center, 20-1, in their South Coast Conference opener on Wednesday.

First-year starters Carmina Ortiz and Chloe Ding were Pasadena’s No. 1 and No. 2 players and picked up the day’s first wins. Ding, who won the consolation singles prize in the Grossmont Individual Tournament two weeks ago, defeated Compton No. 1 player Martha Vega 21-6, 21-12 and Ortiz beat No. 2 Marlene Monzon 21-12, 21-9.

Another standout performer for PCC was No. 3 freshman Preline Bonifacio, who showed good control and birdie placement in her singles and doubles matches. Bonifacio defeated Compton’s No. 4 Blanca Herrera 21-8, 21-13 then No. 3 Carolina Gonzalez 21-6, 21-5.

The Lancers only have three returners this season in sophomores Alejandra Palacios, Serena Yan and Jamie Chi.

Yan was the Lancers’ No. 4 player, winning both her singles matches, while Palacios sat out the singles matches but partnered with Bonifacio for PCC’s No. 2 doubles team. Palacios-Bonifacio defeated No. 1 Vega-Monzon 21-6, 21-8 and No. 2 Gonzalez-Ari Aguilera 21-10, 21-6.

“My main goal this year is (to reach) the state championship,” Palacios said. “I’m preparing for the postseason by working on my speed and footwork since it’s been awhile since we’ve competed.”

The sophomore is using her experience as a tool, helping many of the freshmen with their teamwork in doubles.

“I tell them to expect very good competition and try to coach them a little,” she said. “They can’t let their nerves get in the way of playing a smart game.”

Directed by head coach Bill Sanchez, the Lancers will try to make it 2-0 in SCC play when they play their home opener in Hutto-Patterson Gym on Friday, Mar. 14 against El Camino College (Torrance) at 2 pm.
