News: Badminton's Season Ends Without Fanfare

After the past five seasons in which the Pasadena City College women's badminton team has won conference titles as a team and recorded several trophies at both the South Coast Conference and state individual championship and consolation events, the 2014 campaign was one that the Lancers couldn't rise to the occasion.

In the championship singles at the CCCAA Badminton Individual Singles and Doubles State Championship held at De Anza College on May 9-10, PCC's No. 5 SoCal seeded freshman Carmina Ortiz won her first round match before being eliminated in Round 2 by eventual state runner-up Jurate Foes of Irvine Valley, 21-12, 21-10. Ortiz opened with an exciting win over Skyline's MJ Phan, 21-18, 16-21, 25-18.

Freshman Yingwen Lin lost her opening round match to City College of San Francisco's Koni Chen, 21-14, 21-15. First-year starter Preline Bonifacio also was done in by first-round opponent IVC's Peihong Jiang, 23-21, 21-17. In the consolation bracket, Irvine Valley's Karen Wang outlasted Lin, 21-12, 16-21, 21-12. Bonifacio defeated East Los Angeles' Suki Kwan, 21-15, 19-21, 21-18 and then lost in the conso semifinals to Wang, 21-12, 21-18.

In championship doubles, Yinghong Lin and Yingwen Lin was eliminated by Fresno City's Mittali Sood and Kathy Herr, 21-14, 21-18. Ortiz-Bonifacio was knocked off by IVC's Foes-Jiang, 21-7, 21-5. In the conso quarterfinals, Ortiz-Bonifacio downed El Camino's Bryar Cochran-Tatiana Grandos, 21-17, 21-19. Ortiz-Bonifacio lost to Skyline's Phan and Clarisse Domingo, 21-18, 21-17. The Lin sisters were downed by Irvine's Wang and Deepthi Rao, 21-19, 21-14.

PCC failed to win any hardware at the South Coast Conference Individual Championships after a second place team finish in the dual season at 8-4 (8-5 overall). The Lancers are directed by head coach Bill Sanchez.
