News: Men's Basketball Wins OT Thriller Over LA Trade Tech
It could have been a game that bruised the team's confidence. Instead, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team overcame squandering a 19-point lead in regulation and then battled back from four points down in the extra period to edge Los Angeles Trade Tech, 88-87, in overtime.
With 5.7 seconds left in the OT, PCC guard Jeffrey Dockett sank the front end of a 2-shot free throw opportunity for the winning point. Trade Tech's Donja Brooks missed a long-range attempt at the buzzer to seal the win.
Ranked No. 13 in Southern California, the Lancers improved to 15-5 overall and maintain a tie atop the South Coast Conference North Division standings at 3-1. LA Trade Tech dropped to 10-9 and 2-2.
PCC is a sizzling 9-1 in its last 10 contests and is in the midst of a 3-game conference winning streak.
The Lancers relied once again on their sophomore scoring weapon Taj Spencer, who scored 32 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. Spencer, a sophomore forward, was 10-for-11 at the free throw line and keyed the OT rally with a dunk and layup with less than two minutes left that tied it at 85-85.
Maybe the biggest play of the extra period was a blocked shot by reserve forward Rashad Smith with a minute left. On the ensuing possession, the Lancers took an 87-85 lead on a pair of free throws by frosh guard Jevon Shields.
Dockett finished with 17 points, seven rebounds and six assists while center Faruk Oyalade added 10 points and five rebounds. Frosh guard Adrian Miles put together a well-rounded effort with eight points, five rebounds, five assists and four steals.
PCC built a 37-18 lead as Dockett capped a 19-2 Lancers run on a 3-point bomb with 6:30 left in the first half. Trade Tech whittled away at the PCC lead to cut it to 42-33 by halftime.
The Beavers scorched the net by making 17 of 29 shots from the field in the second half (59 percent). A lay-in by Kyle Reid capped the comeback and a 79-78 lead for Trade Tech with a minute remaining. With 46 seconds to go in regulation, Oyalade hit a free throw that helped send the game into overtime at 79-79.
Reid led LATT with 23 points, including a perfect 9-for-9 at the line and seven steals, while Everett Osborne added 21 points.
"We let Trade Tech back into the game, but we kept our composure in the overtime," PCC head coach Michael Swanegan said. "This is a tough side of the conference. It's going to take finding ways to win late that could decide the eventual champions. We're on a pretty good roll right now."
The Lancers host El Camino College-Compton Center on Wednesday, Jan. 22. Tip-off is 5 p.m. at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
