News: Men's Cagers Return To Playoffs

It's been a full decade since the last appearance by the Pasadena City College men's basketball team in the Southern California Regional Playoffs. The 20-9 Lancers earned the No. 11 seed in the 2014 seedings, but were moved to No. 12 to avoid a South Coast Conference matchup with No. 6 East Los Angeles.

Instead, PCC will travel to face No. 5 Saddleback College in Mission Viejo on Friday, Feb. 28. Tip-off is 7 p.m.

The Lancers, who placed second in the SCC North Division, were one of six teams from the conference to make it into the 20-team regional field. They face a Saddleback team that was co-champion of the Orange Empire Conference and own a 24-5 overall record.

PCC's last playoff game was a 68-63 home loss to eventual state champion Compton on Mar. 3, 2004. The Lancers last won that same season in a 90-80 first-round triumph over Fullerton. PCC last played a road playoff game in 2003 when it lost to Antelope Valley, 83-71, in the opening round of the SoCal Regionals. Both teams were coached by the now retired George Terzian, who directed the Lancers for 20 seasons and more than 300 victories.

Current Lancers head coach Michael Swanegan, in his seventh season, recently recorded his 200th collegiate victory (15 seasons at PCC and Mt. San Antonio).

Swanegan directs All-SCC North Division First Team selections in conference second-leading scorer and sophomore forward Taj Spencer, sophomore point guard Jeffrey Dockett (pictured), and freshman shooting guard Adrian Miles. In the pre-conference, the Lancers were champions of the 8-team, Imperial Valley Holiday Tournament.

PCC's last state title in men's basketball was in 1969 under Dan Ayala. The Lancers also won the state championship under legendary Naismith Hall of Fame head coach Jerry Tarkanian in 1967. Tarkanian was inducted into PCC's Court of Champions last October.

PCC's starting lineup consists of Faruk Oyalade (freshman center, All-SCC honorable mention), Spencer, Rashad Smith (sophomore forward), and guards Dockett and Miles.
