News: No. 12 Men's Basketball Upsets No. 5 Saddleback, 53-49

After last qualifying for the postseason a decade ago, the Pasadena City College men's basketball team figured it might as well make the most of a rare trip to the playoffs. The 12th-seeded Lancers won a defensive struggle, upsetting No. 5 Saddleback, 53-49, Saturday night in Mission Viejo. PCC advanced to Round 3 of the Southern California Regional Playoffs.

PCC (21-9) moves into the quarterfinal round and will visit No. 4 Chaffey (26-5), an 80-76 winner over No. 13 San Diego City, on Wednesday, Mar. 5. The victory over Saddleback (24-6) was the first time a Lancers' team won a road playoff game in 20 years when they were a 13th seed and defeated both Southwestern and Cypress in the 1994 regionals. It was the program's first playoff appearance and win since 2004 (defeated Fullerton).

The Lancers went up 14-4 early only to see the Gauchos come back to take a 24-22 halftme lead. In the second half, it appeared Saddleback would pull away as they upped the lead to double digits, 37-26, on two free throws by De'Corrius Sampson-Young with 12:02 left.

But this has been a resilient PCC team in 2013-14, and instead of folding its tent, the team roared back. Reserve guard Jevon Shields hit his only basket of the game on a 3-pointer. Starting forward Bryce Clifton followed with a basket-and-one as he completed a 3-point play. On the ensuing Saddleback possession, PCC sophomore forward Rashad Smith made the steal and seconds later frosh guard Adrian Miles drained another trey that cut it to 37-35.

The teams traded baskets until sophomore guard Jeffrey Dockett hit a jumper-and-one and that gave PCC the lead for good, 51-49, with 28 seconds remaining. Saddleback missed a field goal attempt with six seconds to go and then Miles made two free throws with two ticks left to seal the playoff upset.

Miles led PCC with 14 points, including three 3s, Smith added 12 points and second-year forward Taj Spencer had 10 points. Dockett scored just five points but dished out six assists.
