News: Women's Hoops' DuBose Relishes Starting Role In 73-55 Win Over Harbor
Missing both of the team's centers, the Pasadena City College women's basketball team turned to role player and sophomore forward Brandi DuBose to carry the team's inside game. DuBose answered a rare starting assignment by scoring 13 points with team highs in rebounds (nine) and steals (five) to help the state No. 4-ranked Lancers defeat Los Angeles Harbor, 73-55, Wednesday night. The game was part of Coaches vs. Cancer Night at Hutto-Patterson Gymnasium.
The Lancers improved to 19-5 overall and 8-1 in South Coast Conference games.
DuBose was one of five PCC players who reached double digits in scoring, led by another sterling effort by sophomore guard/forward Tyler Crockom, who registered 16 points and eight rebounds. Sophomore point guard Desiree Loving added 12 points and nine rebounds (six on the offensive boards), sophomore guard Skai Thompson had 12 points, and frosh guard Kiara Phillips tallied 10 points with six rebounds and four steals.
Off the bench, sophomore forward Averie-Alice Guzman picked up seven rebounds to go with two points.
DuBose, a 6-foot letterman from Muir High, played a greater part in the team's scheme with sophomore Kaitlyn Parks dressed, but sitting out because of a a twisted ankle suffered in the Long Beach overtime win, and freshman post player Bailey Williams also not available (due to a death in her family).
Harbor, a program that returned to action after a five-year hiatus, kept PCC on its toes in the first half. The Seahawks (1-20, 1-8) led briefly at 13-12 and only trailed 26-23 with 85 seconds left in the first half.
At that point, PCC began a 14-4 run capped by a pair of free throws by DuBose for a 40-27 cushion less than four minutes into the second half.
For Harbor, Carla Barrera (17 points, 10 rebounds) and Kiana Angel (14 points, 12 rebounds) each had double-doubles.
The Lancers next travel to face East Los Angeles College in a 5 p.m. SCC North Division tip-off on Friday, Feb. 7.
