News: S&S Duo Helps Women's Cross Country Take 10th At SoCal Preview Meet
The Pasadena City College women's cross country team has a race on its hands, not the races they participate in as much as the competition to see which Lancers runner is fastest. The duo of sophomore Christina Shamirian and freshman Tansica Sunkamaneevongse continued that friendly battle on Sept. 13 as their high finishes helped PCC take 10th place out of 30 teams at the SoCal Preview Meet held at College of the Canyons.
Over the 5-kilometer Central Park course (in Santa Clarita), Shamirian placed 22nd overall out of 221 region runners with a top Lancers time of 20:32.14. Sunkamaneevongse was right on her teammate's trail as she took 25th at 20:36.52.
"We had a runner miss due to illness, so we could have been as high as seventh," said PCC head coach Armand Crespo. "We're getting some great runs from our top two ladies and we've established that we are one of the top teams in the region."
Sophomore Kaidladnni Chavez also ran well at the SoCal Preview with a 55th place showing at 21:15.53. The rest of the Lancers placed as follows: Brenda Grate, 91st, 22:01.90; Emely Garcia, 120th, 22:49; Linda Flores-Barillas, 147th, 23:49; and Ashley Medina, 153rd, 24:20.
Orange Coast won the team title.
LANCERS MEN PLACE 14TH
In the men's 4-mile race at the COC course, the Lancers harriers placed 14th behind a top run by sophomore Brendan Greene, who finished 57th at 23:06.73. Greene has been PCC's highest finisher in all three meets this season.
Sophomore Oswel Caal placed 72nd at 23:31.56 while freshman David Moreno also cracked the top 100 (out of 192 overall) in 96th at 24:12.40. Other PCC finishers were Ruben Torres, 106th, 24:27.41; Faustino Gil, 109th, 24:32.70; Chris Alagala, 115th, 24:41.65; and Russell Yu, 133rd, 25:24.52.
"Clearly we ran in a tight pack with four runners all within 30 seconds of each other," Crespo said. "We have room for improvement but we ran like a team with guys pushing each other. It's a good sign for later meets."
American River from the North crashed the SoCal Preview meet and won the event. Cerritos was the top South finisher in second place.
On Friday, Sept. 20, the Lancers teams will participate in the Foothill Invitational at Cucamonga-Guasti Regional Park in Ontario. The races begin at 10 a.m.
