News: Men's Soccer Season Opens: Late Goal Stuns PCC in 2-1 Loss To SBCC
Controlling a match from a territorial point of view is what all soccer coaches strive for, but sometimes being in control of the field doesn't always translate to being in control of the scoreboard. The Pasadena City College men's soccer team found that out Friday in a season-opening 2-1 loss at Santa Barbara City College.
The Lancers outshot the Vaqueros, 19-16, and had numerous opportunities to score. Santa Barbara scored the winner with eight minutes left as Jamie Sporcic chipped in a shot over the head of PCC goalie Luis Hernandez (sophomore transfer, Knight High, Palmdale). Hernandez finished with four saves.
The Lancers scored in the ninth minute as Zachary Larson (frosh forward, Deer Valley HS, Antioch) secured a lead pass by Eric Chavez (freshman midfielder, Pasadena High) and kicked in a shot from 10 yards out. Santa Barbara had taken a quick 1-0 lead just six minutes into the game on a goal by Daniel Loveday.
PCC twice nearly took the lead. In the 70th minute, Hector Trujillo (freshman midfielder, LA Marshall High) rifled an attempt that SBCC goalie Anthony Mendoza made a leaping two-hand save. In the 79th minute, returning sophomore midfielder Vahagn Manoyan received a crossing pass in the slot, but his point-blank attempt was blocked at the last second by Vaqueros' defender Juan Sanchez.
PCC Head Coach Edgar Manvelyan has compiled a 22-player roster, including eight sophomores, but only three from last year's team in Manoyan (led PCC in assists in 2011 with eight), high-scoring forward Irving Rosales (tied Gor Kirakosyan for the team lead in goals with 14) and defender Michael Alcarez. From two years ago, top assists midfielder Kevin Figueroa returns. Also from that 2010 team, PCC returns defenders Elio Anguiano, Yeyson Caballeros and forward Brandon Flores.
The rest of the 2012 team is made up of first-year players in Alex Radillo (goalie, Salesian High), Marino Bianchi (goalie, Crespi), Kevin Ramirez (defender, Pasadena HS), Luis Flores (forward, Pasadena), Christian Vasquez (defender, Jefferson High), Milton Smith (defender, Pasadena), Vahe Nalbandian (midfielder, Crescenta Valley), Edgar Menendez (midfielder, Eagle Rock), Joseph Erazo (defender, West Adams Prep), Victor Menchaca (midfielder, Belmont), and Ruben Vera (defender, Montebello).
"Last year was a bit of a disappointment because we felt we had a good offensive group, but our defense was lacking," Manvelyan said. "We have some better defenders and now better goaltending. We have to strike a balance between scoring and defending. If we can do that, we're going to be a very good team."
On Tuesday, Sept. 4, the Lancers play their home opener in a 1 p.m. match v. Los Angeles Mission College at PCC's Robinson Stadium.
