News: Men's Soccer Shocks State No. 3 Cerritos, 2-1
For a squad that had just one win its previous 13 matches this season, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team pulled off a David v. Goliath Friday in upsetting state No. 3 and South Region's No. 1-ranked Cerritos College, 2-1. The South Coast Conference match was played at Robinson Stadium.
The Lancers (2-8-3 overall, 2-2-2 in SCC play) scored two goals in a three-minute span during the first half. Yeyson Caballeros controlled a throw-in by Michael Alcaraz and headed in a short shot for a 1-0 Pasadena lead in the 13th minute. In the 16th minute, PCC struck again on a combination play. Caballeros cradled a ball in the Cerritos corner, made a quick pass to Alcaraz, who then crossed it to Eric Chavez. The leaping Chavez flicked in a header shot for a 2-0 lead.
The Lancers played strong defense against the Falcons (8-3-2, 4-2) and relied on aggressive play in front of their own net by Christian Vasquez, Caballeros, Elio Anguiano, Alcaraz, and Vahagn Manoyan.
PCC goalie Alex Radillo made some spectacular saves (seven overall), including robbing Cerritos' Gustavo Rivera on a breakaway in the 66th minute. The Falcons did cut the lead to one just two minutes later on a breakaway goal by Daniel Garcia. Late in the first half, Radillo made consecutive stops at point blank range.
"It was an amazing result for us, to beat the No. 1 team in the (region) and the conference," said a pleased PCC head coach Edgar Manvelyan. "We played a good, physical and smart game. We were very defensive-minded. We countered when we needed to and we scored when we got our chances."
PCC next hosts El Camino College-Compton Center on Tuesday, Oct. 16 in a 3 p.m. start at Robinson Stadium.
