News: Skeleton Men's Soccer Crew Scores First Win
After dealing with a yellow-card happy referee in the previous match, the Pasadena City College men's soccer team visited Fullerton College Tuesday minus some of their top players and head coach Edgar Manvelyan, who also was ejected from the previous match for questioning the referee's reasoning for issuing cards.
With associate head coach Henry Cabral in charge, the Lancers went on a scoring bonanza in the second half and knocked off host Fullerton, 4-2, for PCC's first victory in three matches. Pasadena remains undefeated, however, at 1-0-2.
The Lancers were locked in a scoreless duel when a Hornets' hand ball in the box resulted in a penalty kick goal for sophomore forward Eric Chavez in the 49th minute. Two minutes later, freshman defender Luis Ramirez sent a through ball pass to sophomore forward Zack Larson. Larson beat two defenders to make it 2-0. In the 60th minute, PCC took advantage of a short range free kick as a quick touch by Larson went to Chavez who fired in his second goal.
After Fullerton fought back with two goals by Josue Arias to cut it to 3-2, frosh midfielder Diego Rodriguez received a long pass from freshman defender Fausto Espinoza and scored on a breakaway to cap the victory.
"We had more reserves than ever out there, but we found a way and the offense clicked in that second half," Cabral said. "Our veteran forwards did a great job, especially Zack and Eric. Our goalie Alex Radillo faced a lot of shots and held tough."
The sophomore Radillo made 13 saves overall. Heralded freshman defender George Barba (Birmingham High) played in his first game for the Lancers after clearing eligibility.
On September 6, PCC played a 1-1 tie at Santa Monica College in a game that saw the Lancers whistled for nine yellow cards, three were doubles that led to the red card ejections of top forward Luis Flores, top freshman German Alfaro and Manvelyan. Flores and Alfaro also had to sit out the Fullerton victory.
After an own goal against Pasadena when SMC forward James Rincon's cross was accidentally deflected into the Lancers goal by PCC frosh defender Jaime Jimenez in the 37th minute, the Lancers fought back short-handed. With 25 minutes left, Flores (prior to his second yellow) was tackled by a Corsairs defender in the box. The sophomore then fired in a penalty kick into the left corner for the tying score. It was his third goal of the season.
PCC faces Chaffey College on Tuesday, Sept. 17 in the Lancers home opener. Game time is 3 p.m. at Robinson Stadium.
