News: Men's Soccer Recovers v. Compton, 3-2

The Pasadena City College men's soccer team lost control Tuesday v. El Camino College Compton Center. But after allowing the Tartars to erase the Lancers' 2-0 lead, PCC netted the game winner with six minutes left on Sergio Benitez's goal for a 3-2, South Coast Conference victory at Robinson Stadium.

Defender George Barba sent a lead pass to Benitez, who broke the Compton defense and drove in a 10-yard shot. PCC improved to 5-4-5 overall and upped a strong conference record to 4-2-1. The Lancers were in third place going into the game.

Compton, 5-7-2, but winless in SCC play at 0-5-2, made a valiant comeback, scoring goals in the 58th and 72nd minute to tie it at 2-2. David Vargas blasted in an 18-yard shot to knot the score.

The Lancers traded shot for shot with the Tartars in the second half and relied on some big stops by goalie Gaetano Perez, who finished with 11 saves.

In the 20th minute, Eric Chavez gave PCC a 1-0 lead, lofting a short shot over Compton goalie Manuel Leon. Luis Flores assisted on the score. Five minutes later, Zack Larson received a long lead pass from Max Rico. The speedy sophomore took a hard shot that initially hit a Compton defender, but the momentum of the kick rolled the ball up the defender's shoulder, and then past Leon for a 2-0 lead.

Chavez and Larson each scored their fifth goals. Flores leads the team in scoring with seven goals and six assists for 20 points.

On October 18, the Lancers lost at first-place Cerritos, 1-0.

On Friday, October 25, PCC hosts El Camino College in a 1 p.m. Robinson Stadium kickoff.
