A 2013 season that earned the Pasadena City College men's soccer team the No. 7 seed in the Southern California Regional Playoffs ended with a valiant, but losing effort Saturday at Azusa Pacific University. Tenth-seeded Oxnard downed the Lancers, 1-0, in a first round game.

PCC (8-7-7) fired 13 second-half shots at the Oxnard goal, but couldn't get one past Oxnard goalie Jose Gonzalez (11 saves overall). Oxnard (16-5-1) recorded their seventh straight shutout and extended its winning streak to 12 games.

The Condors scored the game's lone goal in the 59th minute when John Lopez took a rolling cross from Juan Garcia and fired in a hard shot from 15 yards into the lower right corner of the net. PCC goalie Gaetano Perez, who twice made spectacular leaping saves, finished with seven saves. The Lancers outshot Oxnard, 17-14.

Lancers forward Luis Flores was stopped by a tip save by Gonzalez  in the 56th minute on a hard blast. With six minutes left, forward Zack Larson took a short pass in the box but couldn't get strength behind a shot that was easily stopped by Gonzalez. Flores took seven shots on goal overall to lead PCC's offense.

"It was a great run as we can always look back at a big win over Mt. SAC," said PCC head coach Edgar Manvelyan, who completed one his goals since becoming head coach in 2010 by directing the Lancers to the postseason.

"Oxnard is a very strong, technical team. I think we had more athleticism and we really pushed the play in the second half. They are a tough team to score on, and it showed today. I'm still very proud of our effort. The guys threw everything at them and it just came up a little short."

Perez Leads PCC's All-South Coast Conference Selections

Perez, the team's sophomore goalie, was named SCC Co-Defensive Player of the Year after setting Lancers' records as the college's all-time saves and shutouts leader. Perez finished with 183 saves and 10 shutouts in his two seasons. Manvelyan said the team took off when Perez took over the starting role after four games into the season.

Also selected to the All-SCC First Team were Flores, who is 11th on the Lancers' all-time points scoring list, and sophomore Eric Chavez, who led PCC in goals this year with nine.

Making the All-SCC Second Team were Larson, a sophomore, and two freshmen defenders in George Barba and Rodolfo Munoz.
