The high-energy, high-scoring Pasadena City College women's soccer team ran into a defensive machine in visiting East Los Angeles College Friday afternoon. While the Lancers were limited to one score, PCC's defense also met the challenge in a 1-1, South Coast Conference tie at Robinson Stadium.

PCC remains undefeated in SCC play at 1-0-1 and extended its undefeated streak in home matches at 5-0-2. ELAC is 3-2-4 and 0-0-2 in the conference, allowing just one goal now in two SCC matches.

The Lancers looked to be on their way to good things when Heather French launched a free kick from 46 yards out that bounced once inside the box and over the head of ELAC's starting goalie Belen Rodriguez. French's goal gave PCC the lead just three minutes into the game.

PCC's offense could not get free through a tactically sound Huskies' defensive corps and midfield. The Lancers finished with six shots on goal, but didn't get a true scoring opportunity until 11 minutes left in the match. Reserve ELAC goalie Anaissa Gonzalez dove just in time to prevent PCC's Isabella Montano from an open shot at close range. With two minutes left, Cassandra Saavedra ripped a shot that sailed over the net.

East LA scored just before halftime on a toe chip by Jessica Guzman off a lead pass from Leslie Rivera that tied knotted things at 1-1.

Lancers' goalie Tatiana Sanchez made five saves as ELAC had the offensive advantage with 13 shots sent toward the PCC goal. Sanchez made a key save with three minutes left on a header by Sonia Gramajo. French, Bianca Mercado, and Cassandra Orozco performed several defensive plays to keep ELAC from taking the lead. Frosh reserve defender Makenzie Winslow made a couple of sparkling plays at midfield in the second half.

PCC forward Nancy Nunez, the current leading scorer in the SCC with eight goals, missed the second half after falling ill due to the intense heat. Sophomore forward Vanessa Capra, the conference's second-leading scorer with six goals and five assists, was limited to one shot on goal.
