News: Capra's Late Goal Gives Women's Soccer Rare Win Over LBCC
No opponent has given the Pasadena City College women's soccer team more problems than Long Beach City College. The Vikings won 23 games and tied five others in their 31 previous encounters with the Lancers. On Tuesday afternoon, visiting PCC won for just fourth time ever against Long Beach when forward Vanessa Capra scored with six minutes remaining in a 1-0, South Coast Conference victory.
The last time the Lancers beat Long Beach on the road was in 2005 when they snapped the Vikings' amazing 99-match undefeated streak. PCC is now off to its best conference start in three seasons under head coach Randy Lilavois at 2-0-1 and 6-2-2 overall.
On the winning score, Isabella Montano (Glendale High) sent a long lead pass in the center of the field. The speedy Capra (Eagle Rock HS) took off and then met LBCC goalie Jeanette DeAnda as both struck the ball at the same time. The result was the ball's momentum carried it into the net. It was Capra's seventh goal of the year.
Long Beach (4-3-2, 0-1-2 in SCC play) had a one-on-one breakaway attempt with three minutes left, but Hannah Hermansson's near-post shot was scooped up by PCC goalie Tatiana Sanchez. The Lancers' freshman netminder from Burroughs High finished with three saves for the shutout.
"We're playing as well as we can around our goalie, allowing her to make the necessary saves," said Lilavois. "When you keep games close for 90 minutes, you put yourself in a better position to score a late goal like we did. We're playing good soccer and the confidence level for the players is getting greater with each win."
Undefeated in its last four matches (3-0-1), PCC next hosts Los Angeles Harbor College on Friday, October 5. Game time is 4 p.m. at Robinson Stadium, a place where the Lancers are also undefeated in 2012 at 5-0-2.
