News: Women's Soccer Takes 16th Seed, Hosts SMC In Play-In Round Thursday
For the first time since 2007, the Pasadena City College women's soccer team has advanced to the Southern California Regional Playoffs. On Tuesday at the regional coaches seeding meeting, the Lancers received the No. 16 seed out of 18 teams. The Lancers hosts No. 17 Santa Monica College in a play-in round game on Thursday, Nov. 15. The 3 p.m. game will be played at Occidental College due to the fact that PCC's Robinson Stadium field is too narrow to be sanctioned for postseason competition.
The Lancers, who finished 12-4-5 in second place in the South Coast Conference, are one of five SCC colleges that were selected for the playoff field. Conference champion Cerritos is No. 3, fourth place Mt. San Antonio is the 11th seed, while fifth place East Los Angeles at No. 15 will host No. 18 and conference third place Long Beach City in the other play-in game.
The seedings are based on a power ratings formula that rewards teams for strength of schedule in pre-conference while ignoring conference placing or conference head-to-head performance.
Pasadena is facing a Santa Monica squad that defeated the Lancers, 1-0, on Sept. 11 at SMC. The Corsairs (10-6-4) are the fourth place team from the Western State Conference South Division. Santa Monica is led by Meg Pearce, who scored 17 goals and was second in the entire WSC in points with 45.
The Lancers are paced by the SCC's leading goals scorer Nancy Nunez, who has 15 goals, and playmaker Vanessa Capra with 14 goals and a conference second-best 39 points.
If Pasadena gets by Santa Monica, the Lancers will advance to a first round playoff at No. 1 seed Santiago Canyon (19-0-1) on Saturday, Nov. 17. Match time is 2 p.m.
PCC is 3-5 in its playoff history, last winning a playoff in 2001, 2-1 over Rio Hondo.
